I am hooked! I don’t know what phone sex is really like but if talking to John Russell from Roxton Bailey Robinson is anything to go by, his could be the next number added to my speed-dial list.I
am calling all wives who feel hard done by when the shooting season is in full swing to look to the spring and take up J.R. Hartley’s game - fly fishing.
As we enter the Mayfly season, I thought I would explore the world of rods, waders and ghillies. Apparently you can cast off for around £1k - not a lot compared to shooting. This will set you up for sea trout fishing and for only a few shillings more you can even have a go at salmon fishing in Scotland.
My NBF
(New Best Friend), John, tells me that in past years Scotland has been a bit disappointing but it is now on the up and up. The real appeal of fly fishing is all about the mystique surrounding the totally wild side of nature. Will you or won’t you catch a fish? And, of course, the ultimate test is playing with the one that got away.
If all this Ratty-like existence of messing about on rivers bores you, you can always buy a mounted singing ‘Billie the fish’ and regale with tales of
“No really, it was this big!”
or those of you with the good fortune of living by the sea, you will already know the benefits of being near it. But for those who don’t, one of the best things is the salty air that whips your face as you walk on the beaches and cliffs, when you lick your lips you can literally taste the sea.
While this is a great feeling it isn’t so great for your skin, but I have been using an amazing product from the Liz Earle by Mail range - Superbalm (tel 01983 813913). It really is super and is a must for anyone in the great outdoors - men, women or children - and I have even put it on the pads of my dog’s paws!
My husband is extremely dismissive about anything like this, but I have him reaching for the pot when he goes off sailing. Superbalm first, then sunblock. His training is really coming on.
